Discovering Delight in the Details: The Sew Yours Run Around Wristlet

Last week, I had the distinct pleasure of creating the "Run Around Wristlet" by Sew Yours, and it has quickly become an indispensable companion in my daily life. This thoughtfully designed wristlet comfortably holds about a dozen cards, my essential keys, lip gloss, mints, and even a tissue – everything I need within easy reach!

From a design perspective, what truly elevates this bag are the ingenious seams. While it could have been constructed from simpler, whole panels and still serve its basic function, the beauty and refined finishing touches lie in the clever way the flap and zipper are seamlessly integrated within the exterior seams. This speaks volumes about the designer's attention to detail.

Working on this project sparked an idea: you can infuse this level of sophistication into virtually any basic bag design by incorporating a few strategically placed seams. These seams can be more than just structural elements. Imagine them as opportunities to:

  • Remain as stylish seams: Topstitching on either side can create a visually appealing and professional finish.
  • Introduce a sleek slip pocket with a flap closure: Adding both functionality and an elegant touch.
  • Incorporate a discreet zipper: Perfect for securing valuable or personal items.
How to sew a Market Tote Bag with Button Tab Closure

Let's take my Classic Market Tote as an example to illustrate this concept:

  • On the rear exterior: Envision a vertical seam running either down the center (halfway) or positioned at the one-third mark. This seam could be simply topstitched for visual interest, or more intriguingly, it could conceal a vertical zipper pocket – ideal for stashing cash, a passport, or even personal safety items.
  • On the front: Consider adding a horizontal seam just above the existing pockets. This seam could then be used as the foundation for integrated flap closures with secure snap fastenings, adding a layer of sophistication to the overall design.

These are precisely the kinds of in-depth discussions we used to have in my Bag Making and Design (AMC) master class. I have such fond memories of those eight weeks spent collaborating with each student, meticulously working through the unique details of their custom bag creations. It was a truly rewarding experience to see their visions come to life.

If there's sufficient interest, I would be thrilled to offer a similar comprehensive program in July and August 2025. The cost to participate can be tailored to the specific needs and interests of the group. To make this endeavor worthwhile for both myself and you (as peer-to-peer learning is such a valuable part of the process), we would need a minimum of ten enthusiastic students.

Just like the original AMC, this eight-week series will guide you through the essentials of bag making and design, culminating in your very own custom bag from concept to completion. We would meet live via video every Saturday evening at 7 pm Eastern Time. Additionally, a dedicated classroom page would serve as a hub for posting updates, fostering interaction among participants, and providing access to recordings of our sessions for those who can't attend live.

If this sounds like an exciting opportunity to elevate your bag making skills and design your dream bag, please fill out the Google Form linked below so I can gauge the level of interest and move forward with planning:
