Sewing My Dream Coat: A Journey of Art, Fabric, and Community

From Frustration to Fulfillment: My Sewing Journey and a Dream Project!

My early sewing days were, to put it mildly, full of frustration. It took me over a decade to truly find my rhythm, to reach a point where I didn't just enjoy sewing, but actually craved it. That sweet spot, where time melted away and I could create something I was genuinely proud of, completely hooked me. Since then, my passion has evolved. I've moved from being a maker, designer, and Etsy entrepreneur to what I now call a "passion sewist." I sew what I want, when I want, and while it's different from my earlier pursuits, it's incredibly rewarding in its own way.

During the pandemic, I finally learned how to work with commercial garment patterns. For a long time, I've dreamed of stitching a custom wardrobe from beautiful linen fabric. But there's another dream that has been simmering even longer: creating a patchwork coat. Not just any coat, mind you, but a literal work of art—a piece so significant it could be an heirloom.

Embarking on a Masterpiece: My Patchwork Coat Plan

The time for that ultimate project has finally arrived, and I'm committed to doing it right. As we discussed last week with systems, I've outlined a three-step process for this venture:

  1. Practice First: I'll sew a practice coat from inexpensive fabric, using similar materials, and tailor the fit as needed. This will allow me to perfect the pattern before working with my precious fabrics.
  2. The "Real Deal": Once the fit is perfected, I'll piece together whole cloth panels using my favorite fabrics to create the actual patchwork coat.
  3. Document the Journey: I'll keep a detailed journal of the entire experience, complete with photos. This will allow me to reflect on the process, track my progress, and archive this unique creative journey.

A Serendipitous Find and a Community Invitation!

On a whim—or perhaps it was pure luck—I stumbled upon an Etsy seller who was parting with all of her discontinued Amy Butler fabric scraps. I bought them all, to the tune of $250! They arrived last week, and I was absolutely overjoyed!

They are even more beautiful than I imagined and truly feel destined to be part of this coat. For me, creativity has always been a portal to my highest self; I love who I am when I'm fully immersed in a project. This patchwork coat is going to be that kind of project, and I would love for you to come along for the ride.

We'll be working on our coats all summer long, and it's not too late to join us! Everyone in our group has selected their own pattern. I'm personally working with the Crinkle Dreams Elemental Coat, which comes with a step-by-step video tutorial, written instructions, and easy-to-cut pattern pieces.
